Autumn will see the release of the long awaited Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of the novel, The Great Gatsby – the book was written by the famous author F.Scott Fitzgerald and is regarded as a literary classic. Northern Ballet are also now underway with the tour of their latest production of The Great Gatsby and our creative team have been busy styling, cutting and maintaining some gorgeous 1920s styles especially for their dancers.

The book is set in the roaring 20’s and follows a life of the New York glitterati, it was an era filled with decadence and glamour, the show will mirror this with heavily beaded costumes, head dresses and elegant hairstyles. Fashions from this decade have been spotted on the catwalk for the last few seasons, we have been seeing heavily beaded shimmering gowns, draped shoulder capes and even smart pant suits making an appearance,

The 20’s was well known for its stylish women and equally as groomed gentlemen. Suits were sharp, and attention to detail was important, Men’s hairstyling has seen a huge comeback recently with the use of gel, side partings and a much more sophisticated image returning to the guys of today. This has seen a large increase in the demand for quality barbering and regular visits to the salon including good after-care advice in products and at home styling. The women mostly wore their hair cut short, in sharp bobs which were often worn sleek with a head dress with those famous kiss curls sneaking out of them or would be dressed out for more formal affairs by pin curling and finger waving, whatever the style there was always a structure to it.

In anticipation of the upcoming ballet many of the dancers have embraced the opportunity for a change. Northern Ballet asked Russell Eaton to cut and style the dancers hair for the production and we jumped at the chance of being able to create so many new looks. The famous 20’s bob is one of the most stylish cuts around and is quite the change for most of them as the job usually requires longer hair that is normally pinned back into a secure bun, the girls are really enjoying being able to flaunt their new styles on stage and in the press, we recently worked on a feature for the Yorkshire Post, the fabulous clothes were supplied by Harvey Nichols in Leeds and are some of the latest fashions in store now. The shoot itself took place in Bibi’s, the perfect setting with its amazing Art Deco feel and spangling dance floor, not to mention its famous Bellini, a cocktail most popular in the 20’s.

Definitely worth a visit especially to see the hair!!!

DECEMBER 2012, Russell Eaton review: Nail treatment

I rarely post about beauty on my blog. I’m not one that tries out every product under the sun, once I find something I like I stick to it, so I guess I’d never really have much to say. Liz Earle and Mac have my whole heart and that’s all you need to know.

But….
There’s something I’ve become a little addicted too… Gel colour nails. In any form really, Shellac, Gellish, OPI Gel Colour  . I’ve always had this problem with nail addictions. From about the age of 15 I wore acrylics, as I got older that grew old and I managed to grow out my horribly weak nails. Now I’d say I’m pretty lucky, my nails are strong and very healthy, but I got sick and tired of having to change the colour nearly every day because paint chips so easily and I like to clean (OCD & nail varnish = nightmare), and I HATE unpainted nails. Life couldn’t be easier with this amazing thing called gel colour, now I’m wondering what i’d do without it!
The lovely guys at Leeds salon Russell Eaton, invited me too try out a nail treatment. The salon is gorgeous and the staff lovely. I chose to have a gel removal and OPI Gel Colour as I hadn’t tried it before. It was really relaxing and I was giving water complemented with lemon, it’s the small things that make us happy right?
I chose to have Ink which is a purple-blue toned shade with tiny sparkles which you can only see under the light and I have to say almost two weeks later they’re still going strong! Cooking, cleaning, tapping on a keyboard for 8 hours a day and it’s not shifted! Very impressed.

I had a fantastic experience with the guys at Russell Eaton and will definitely be back, it’s so convenient as well because it’s based just up the road from work in the heart of the city centre! Perfect lunchtime treat.

Remember this? The brilliant time I had getting my hair cut and coloured in a local salon in September? Well they only invited me back to get my nails done! #excited? I think so.

When Russell Eaton told me I could try any nail finish I fancied at their swanky nail bar, I didn’t know what to choose. Minx? Amazing, but no special occasion to show it off. Acrylics? Bit scary and not very me. Shellac? Well I had heard good things… My point is, there are so many options available in the realms of nail art these days, it’s difficult to know what to pick. In short, you have to do your research and pick what’s right for you. For me, a nail colour that last 3 weeks with no chips and allows me to keep my natural nail shape and a length that I like and feels practical is a nice idea. But how do I choose a colour that will go with everything I wear for 3 whole weeks?

That’s part of the reason I went for OPI Gel Color over Shellac. Though I’ve heard great things about the latter, the colour range seems slightly limited. I don’t know if that’s technically true, as I’ve discovered that Shellac offer quite a few shades after doing some research (36 to be precise) but at least in the salons that my friends and I frequent, there seems to be fewer shades to choose from, and most of them seem pretty traditional (pinks, reds and nudes). I can tell you for sure that there are LOTS of OPI Gel Color shades to choose from – in fact, most of the normal OPI Nail Polish range is also available in Gel Color, even the recent Skyfall collection. I went for something I’ve seen on many bloggers and that I thought complimented my skintone: Brisbane Bronze.

The Treatment: The treatment at Russell Eaton was welcoming, relaxing and truly a treat. As I mentioned in my last post, I’ve been working pretty hard lately and a post-work Friday evening at the salon was just what I needed. I was spoilt with lots of tea and nail technician Rose talked me through every step as we went. So here’s the technical bit: Gel manicures were brought to the market to improve the longevity of a manicure. Both Shellac and OPI Gel Color claim to be chip resistant and shiny for at least 14 days. Rose told me mine would probably last somewhere between 2 and 3 weeks. The gel factor is what makes the manicure long wearing, and is set by “curing” under a light. While Shellac is made from a mix of gel and traditional nail polish, OPI Gel Color is entirely gel, apparently boosting the qualities of a gel manicure even more.

Rose asked me what shape I would like my mid-length nails. I went for a rounded square tip. She then gave my cuticles a little TLC before applying a base coat. After each coat was applied I stuck my hand under the OPI branded light with a built in timer. Another plus of OPI Gel Color versus Shellac is that each coat “cures” in a record time of 30 seconds. That’s super speedy drying. That being said, my manicure didn’t feel rushed or short. The process took around half an hour , with 2 coats of colour plus a top coat applied once the base was on to protect my nails from getting stained and to provide a clean, flat surface for the gel to cling to.

"Russell

My Verdict: It took me a while to get used to the manicure. It is thicker than normal nail colour, so my nails felt a little bulky and close up look a bit bumpy at the ends (presumably the ends are thicker to prevent chipping at the tips). Also, as someone who loves nail polish, sticking to one colour for 3 whole weeks feels like a challenge. However, once I’d stopped scrutinising my nails close up and rationalised that they don’t always have to match my mood, they actually look fantastic at normal distance. 11 days in and there are no chips whatsoever. I have flaky nails anyway and now with going to the gym more often and showering more, they seem to get more wear and tear and a normal polish won’t last more than a day without looking shabby. The OPI Gel Color is shiny, thick and looks like it’s on new every single day. Plus, I picked a colour that would go with everything I wear, so that hasn’t been a problem at all.

In regard to regrowth, 11 days in and it’s only just starting to show. I had been worried about it, but my cuticles actually look pretty fabulous, possibly as a result of the treatment, and it’s not really something anyone would notice until they got up close. Here’s a picture of how they look today. Still pretty snazzy, right? It’s also worth noting that with professional removal (prices at the end of the post) your nails will not suffer at all, and there’s less chance for them to break or flake will you’re wearing the manicure.

"Russell

Would I do it again?: All in all, I’m 75% loving it. I love the idea of getting my nails done every 3-4 weeks, it’s a nice little bit of me time. A first application costs £27.50 (Russell Eaton treated me to mine – thank you guys!) and removal with reapplication costs £32.50. In relation to acrylic nails which I had and maintained a few years ago, I don’t think that is bad value for money. Sure, it’s an extravagance and it’s hardly cheap – but it’s a lovely bit of luxury that I wouldn’t mind treating myself to when payday rolls around. It’s also a quick enough treatment to not intrude too much on your day to day life; you can easily book in on your lunch hour, or on the way home from work ready for your Friday night out. What with Russell Eaton being right in the centre of town – I think that’s pretty damn convenient! Book in with a friend and ask to sit side by side at the nail bar – a great way to catch up if you’re time is limited or you don’t fancy the usual drinks or dinner!

I’ve already booked in to go and get them removed and reapplied for the festive season (which I’m paying for with my hard earned cash, just fyi). Though I don’t know if I will commit to these year round (what about when I fancy some neon green in summer time? Can I commit for 3 weeks?!) all the travelling around and festive parties going on during December and early January can make it hard to maintain chip free nails – OPI Gel Color will take all the stress out of that for me and my nails will look great everyday, hurrah!

You can book an appointment with Russell Eaton in Leeds City Centre by calling 0113 2469162 or find them at  4-6 Boar Lane. You can follow their tweets @RussellEaton_ too! Book in with Rose for nails and Rob if you fancy your hair doing too. Don’t forget to tell them who sent you!

SATURDAY, 24 NOVEMBER 2012 Review: Russell Eaton OPI Gelcolor

I was kindly invited down to Russell Eaton in Leeds today for OPI Gelcolor – I picked out this colour from their new James Bond collection it is called ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.’ I have to say I wasn’t sure what to expect as I’d never had anything like this done before. These gel nails last up to three weeks – as I have some Christmas parties coming I needed to pick a colour that would go with a number of different outfits. Also it doesn’t hurt to have a little bit of sparkle for the festive season.

I was treated to a lovely cup of tea – complete with cup and saucer. The LED light dries each layer of the gel colour and sets it within 30 seconds. You can feel the heat on your nails when you orginally put your hand in but after that you can’t feel anything. There was a massive range of colours to choose from so whatever the occasion you’ll be able to find a color to suit. I’ll let you all know how they hold up but they feel strong and hardwearing so I expect them to last out. I also picked up this colour because I loved it so much. What do you think? I’m sure I’m going to get addicted to this 3 week manicure! I’d like to say thanks to Russell Eaton for having me and I’m sure you’ll be seeing me again soon.

RUNWAY – THE NEW SEASON

TO DYE FOR-For A/W12, session stylists across the world’s fashion capitals plunged fearlessly into colour introducing colourful dip dyes and brightly coloured roots injecting colour to looks across the catwalks of many designers. Autumn/winter 2012-13 has seen designers still opt for the dip dye. A whole host of colour combinations were on show at Prada and Pringle of Scotland, while at Jean Paul Gaultier the look was reversed, with models sporting vibrant spray-painted roots.

SHE BANGS- Fringes are in – it’s the Rooney Mara effect as a host of designers have been dedicating their shows to ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ star, most notably at Versace, Antonio Berardi, Marni and Iceberg. This is a look we are seeing filtering from catwalk to salon as it is a great way to modernise long hair giving it an edgy feel.

OFFSIDE RULE-Here’s one offside rule that we can all get to grips with – the parting. For A/W12 a new geometry comes into play, with neat and sleek looks parted to the side. SLEEK SIDE PARTINGS are neat and sleek, the side partings at Diane von Furstenberg, Victoria Beckham, Christian Dior, Jil Sander and many, many more lent a chic minimalism that let the clothes speak for themselves.Gone is the power parting down the middle, in its place is a side parting with a sense of understated elegance.

Stylish Waves – From victory rolls to Marcel Waves and forties up-do’s, the runway was packed with inspirations from past eras, we are loving these retro techniques at Russell Eaton and the Marcel and finger wave in particular adds a feminine, intricate detail to the hair for a really striking look. The beauty with the vintage revival is that we can take these traditional techniques, reuse and combine them with today’s technological developments in electricals and products and translate strong styles into wearable trends for the modern woman. The vintage revival has taken over the AW12 catwalks with a melting pot of references, The 1920s finger and Marcel Waves are the perfect vintage trend and catwalk technique to create fashion-fuelled looks that will keep you bang o trend this A/W.

  • try using a mixture of  gel and hold & gloss spray to create a varnish-like product that’s easy to apply.
  • Using your fingers and combs, shape the hair into finger waves, pin them in place with long clips and leave the hair to dry
  • finish with a spritz of shine spray for an ultra gloss finish.

Creative director Robert Eaton says, "its great to work with the Emmerdale team and we love looking after their hair for them, just because they are in the Dales doesn’t mean they cant look stylish".
